Derek Cianfrance turns a stranger-than-fiction crime story into a soulful character study in Roofman, based on the true exploits of Jeffrey Manchester — the Army reservist who broke into McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their ceilings, then hid for months inside a Toys “R” Us. What could have played as tabloid absurdity instead becomes something heartbreakingly human. Channing Tatum brings his usual favorite-grandson charm to a man whose decency and delusion are constantly at war, while Kirsten Dunst grounds the story as a single mother drawn to the possibility of redemption that can’t quite exist.

Cianfrance films the absurd and the intimate with equal tenderness, giving Roofman the uneasy pulse of a folk ballad — part caper, part confession. It’s funny until it isn’t, thrilling until it hurts, and by the time the credits roll, you realize you’ve been rooting for a man you should’ve given up on long ago.

BENEFIT FOR THE CAPE COD FISHERMEN’S ALLIANCE

Fishermen live a life that's deeply connected to nature, shaped by the rhythm of the tides, the temperament of the sea, and the unpredictability of the catch. Their work is both physically demanding and emotionally rewarding, often driven more by passion than profit.

The Hand That Holds The Line, a new documentary by Geoff C. Bassett and Kim Roderiques, shine a light on Cape Cod fishermen who have devoted their lives to one of the most challenging and dangerous professions in the world.

COMEDY NIGHT AT THE ORPHEUM!

Longtime New England headliners Mike Donovan and Bob Niles join host Jim Ruberti as comedy comes to the Chatham Orpheum Theater, 637 Main Street, Chatham on Thursday, Oct. 23.

Presented by Scamps Comedy, the show is one of three professional comedy shows scheduled at the theater during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Material is suitable for adults over 21.

 Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Mike Donovan, recipient of the 2024 Boston Comedy Legacy Award, is from the legendary wave of “Ding Ho Comics” from the 1970s and still has his fastball. The South Boston native works the top clubs in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and has been featured on The NESN Comedy All-Stars, ESPN’s SportsCenter, Fox’s Best Damn Sports Show Period, and the Showtime network. He was featured in the documentary When Standup Stood Out. He’s also a frequent guest on Boston radio, particularly WBZ.

Niles has lived an unusual life, and when he examines this life for people to see, the results are pure dynamite! Bob was just 20 years old when his first child was born, and his second child came when he was 46. Niles examines the happenings in between, with hilarious observations from crazy situations. From the Woodstock-generation to the 21st century, Niles has been both confused observer and baffled participant.

Centerville’s Jim Ruberti, “Cape Cod’s Favorite Comedian,” is a Boston comedian and actor who has been entertaining people for more than 30 years. He is the regular New Year’s Eve host of comedy at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, and features and headlines around New England. Venues include Boston’s famed Nick’s Comedy Stop, the Mass Arts Center, Comedy Key West, and more. He has performed at the Hampton Beach Comedy Festival, Cape Cod Comedy Weekend and is a cast member for the Ranting Parents Comedy Tour. Jim’s comedy is clean and fresh, centered around family and current events.

A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant

Thursday, October 9 • 10:00a

Saturday. October 25 • 10:00am

Running Time: 1h 28m

A Savage Art chronicles the life and career of Australian-born, Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Patrick Oliphant. Oliphant’s tenure as an American cartoonist spanned five decades and ten U.S. Presidents. In 1990 The New York Times called Oliphant “the most influential editorial cartoonist now working.” The film covers the history and importance of political cartoons in global democracies, as well as the decline in the profession and in the newspaper industry. It also highlights the effects of extreme political partisanship on media and editorial cartooning, and shows how Oliphant used his biting wit, sharp critical eye and masterful drawing skills to take on presidents, popes and the powers that be.
